For the Love of Barbie

It’s Miss USA month! In three weeks, I’ll watch the new Miss USA being crowned. And in three weeks and one day, I’ll sit down in front of the computer and read the ramblings of the latest blogger, ranting about the ramifications of such disregard to female empowerment that pageants like Miss USA heap upon the psyche of millions of women.Spoiler alert: Their blogs will go a little like this.“Why do we still have, in this enlightened feminist age, beauty pageants that degrade women by having them strut around in bikinis and heels? Aren’t we as a society past this superficial display of outward beauty? Shouldn’t we be celebrating women of all sizes, rather ...

For the Love of Barbie

Usually, I blog about photography. Since I'm a photographer, that would make sense. This post is different. I wanted to write about something personal: Our kids. That's them in the photo. Current photos really don't tell the story like that flashback photo from a Sci-Fi convention does. I wanted to give you a visual, and that photo pretty much sets the stage for this post. Here's a snippet from a tonight's conversation with our youngest son:Me: So who all is coming over tomorrow night?Son: The usual suspects. Oh, and one more. He's the weirdest kid in school. Me: Really? Because, I've met you all. I don't think it can get any weirder.  And, really, they are strange ...

For the Love of Barbie

Every year, we help run a “boot camp” for women competing for Miss USA and Miss Teen USA with the fabulous Hernan Rivera and Michelle Holmes. We work with contestants on all phases of competition. There are photo shoots (naturally). There are makeup lessons, walking lessons, and interview practice. And it’s in this interview practice that we see what truly matters to these young women. There are ALWAYS tears. Not because we’re mean interviewers. But because in this brief moment, we see and understand just how badly these young ladies want to win. And it’s in this brief window of time that everyone understands that not everyone is going to.Imagine this: ...

For the Love of Barbie

Do you ever browse a photographer's website and see some truly off the wall stuff? Do you ever wonder where they got those ideas? And ask why would they shoot them?I do. And sometimes, I want to be one of those photographers. Don't get me wrong. I love shooting what I shoot. I have found my niche! And our photos aren't boring photos by any means. And I am 100% certain I'd never want to be a full-time photographer who comes up with over-the-top concepts on a daily basis. But, every once in a while, I feel the need to get a little silly. And do something that truly is just for fun.So, I do. And now I have a handful of photos and no idea what to do with them. I really ...

For the Love of Barbie

I LOVE window shopping on the North end of Michigan Avenue. And, please, would someone give me their credit card and drop me off on Rodeo Drive for a few hours?I especially love watching clips from New York Fashion Week. All the designers. Crazier the better. I WANT TO SHOOT THOSE CLOTHES! I can't afford those clothes. And neither can anyone that I know. But...fortunately with the power of the Google, and a little creative shopping, we can find some designer-inspired outfits and some crazy cool accessories to help our photos sing like the pages of Vogue! I thought I would share a few of my favorite sites where I find a little inspiration, and occasionally, a bargain! I love ...
